This is the week

Here's a spiritual thought I guess:
This is from D&C 121 (aka part of the best 3 chapter run of all scripture,
121-123)
45 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the
household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then
shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of
the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.
46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an
unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an
everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee
forever and ever.

Wow!
Confidence is an interesting thing. I guess to start, what is confidence?
Honestly, I think I would probably define it as the ability to feel calm in
potentially stressful situations. I could imagine that being the presence
of God could be quite stressful. Different characteristics could be
considered "confident" in different situations. For example, knowing how to
skate would probably make you pretty confident on ice but I don't really
feel like it would make you feel confident in a history test. What's cool
is that the two skills that God promises us will increase our confidence in
His presence are very widely applicable. Charity and virtue are about as
fundamental as loving God and loving your neighbor. Charity is pretty
easily defined as the pure love of Christ. If you ask yourself "what would
Jesus do in this situation?" That thing is being charitable. And virture is
basically being in control of our minds. President Boyd K. Packer put it in
a way that I LOVE:
“The mind is like a stage. During every waking moment the curtain is up.
There is always some act being performed on that stage. It may be a comedy,
a tragedy, interesting or dull, good or bad; but always there is some act
playing on the stage of your mind. ...
If you permit [bad thoughts] to go on, all thoughts of any virtue will
leave the stage. You will be left, because you consented to it, to the
influence of unrighteous thoughts. ...
If you can fill your mind with clean and constructive thoughts, then there
will be no room for these persistent [thoughts], and they will leave.”
Charity and virtue are both examples of self mastery. And what is the
reward as we master ourselves? Confidence before God. I sure bet it would
make you confident in other places of your lives, too. Plus, the Holy Ghost
would have no reason not to be with you. Pretty solid blessings all around.
The late President Nelson has an amazing talk about these verses from last
April (in fact, the talk is called "Confidence in the Presence of God!"). I
cant link it right now but go read it, its epic as heck!!!

But yeah, pretty great week!
I'm with a missionary named Elder Moser and I'm in Pasadena again. Some
highlights:
On Saturday, we had a MASSIVE Houston-style thunderstorm. It lasted from
probably about 6:30 to 7:30PM. It literally flooded everything in that
teeny time. There was also apparently a tornado spotted or something
because they set off some sirens, too!! Pretty crazy. After the storm
chilled out a little bit, we went out to work again. We didn't have the car
so we had to walk, haha! We were soaking wet by the end. Fun times. Nobody
answered the door, but at least we can say we did it!
Sunday was pretty chill, we had a few friends come to church. We had one
friend named Antonio come 2 weeks ago, who was on date for baptism, but he
didn't come last week so we had to take him off date :(
Today, we got to go to the temple!! It's always the best.
But yeah, we've been doing a ton of walking the past few weeks. We've hit 6
miles a few days. Thats pretty decent (maybe I can lose a few pounds too).
The reason why is that we've had a bunch of folks who expressed intrest,
but all over our area. We decided that instead of focusing our efforts on
finding in one area, it made more sense to find as we walked between
contacts, and it's been pretty dang effective.
The mix between being a walking missionary and a driving missionary is fun
for real.
But yeah sometimes being a missionary is stressful, but sometimes it isn't.
I love it!!
