LETTER 013 — MONDAY, 3 FEBRUARY 2025 · week 33
ICE-y issues
Huh. It's warm out but there's still a lot of ICE!
Hey y'all! How are you?
Pretty good week over here in Galena Park!
It's been a little bit crazy, because basically the entire town is in an
uproar right now. Theres been a LOT of incarcerations and basically all of
our friends think they're next. Two white boys walking around with suits on
haven't really made the greatest impression in some of these neighborhoods
haha. In case you haven't heard, YS policy regarding undocumented
immigrants has changed immensely in the past month. They're cracking down
really hard right now on everybody down here basically. The Bishop, during
fast and testimony meeting, gave about a 30-minute talk about how the feds
cant come into the church, and that the Houston PD isnt working with ICE,
and Miranda rights type stuff. I would have never imagined having to deal
with this kind of thing before the mission. The faith that these people
have is amazing to see. Allegedly, the church made a policy change on
illegal immigrants or something of the like, and so the Elders in the other
ward can no longer ask members for rides if the friend might be illegal.
Also they can't ask them about their legal status. Our Bishop didnt say
anything about it but I imagine the Stake President will say something
soonish. But yeah a lot of friends here don't have cars and if members
can't give rides, all Spanish missionary work here will grind to a halt.
Ok anyway spiritual thought!
This comes from a freakin amazing talk by Henry B. Eyering, given in
October 1998:
Our ability to touch others with our warning voice matters to all who are
covenant disciples of Jesus Christ. Here is the charge given to each of the
members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: “Behold, I sent
you out to testify and warn the people, and it becometh every man who hath
been warned to warn his neighbor” (D&C 88:81).
[...]
The Lord would not use the word warn if there is no danger. Yet not many
people we know sense it. They have learned to ignore the increasing
evidence that society is unraveling and that their lives and family lack
the peace they once thought was possible. That willingness to ignore the
signs of danger can make it easy for you to think: Why should I speak to
anyone about the gospel who seems content? What danger is there to them or
to me if I do or say nothing? Well, the danger may be hard to see, but it
is real, both for them and for us. For instance, at some moment in the
world to come, everyone you will ever meet will know what you know now.
They will know that the only way to live forever in association with our
families and in the presence of our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus
Christ, was to choose to enter into the gate by baptism at the hands of
those with authority from God. They will know that the only way families
can be together forever is to accept and keep sacred covenants offered in
the temples of God on this earth. And they will know that you knew. And
they will remember whether you offered them what someone had offered you.
Phew. This is pretty insane to me. The gospel is, as 'gospel' translates,
good news. But what happens to those who don't know? Who can tell them the
good news? People who know! Those who have recived the message have to tell
other people. Knowledge, if left fallow profits nothing. What we know is
true. Will you share it? If not, why not? What do you have to lose? Semd
it. Share the gospel. I don't care how, figure it out. Ask your ward
mission leader how you can help. You've been warned.
Anyway besides the whole ICE stuff. I've been chillin! I got a haircut
today, kinda look neatish. I think this is the shortest I've ever had my
hair so thats neat. I Basically have the missionary flat cut now so yeah.
We're planning on bowling later today as a district so that should be
really fun maybe!
We've been playing a game called Secret Hitler quite a little bit so that's
been fun, too!
On friday we had our District Council like normal but then after that we
had a teaching activity with our zone. We did role plays and stuff it was
really cool! Umm yeah, photo time! Urban wildlife is back!
Finished my late Christmas present to myself
