LETTER 007 โ MONDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2024 ยท week 18
Subject Line Here
Hi guys <3
I hope y'all are doing stupendous!
It was a pretty slow week for me, just keeping the missionary work working
so that was great!
Ok here's the scripture, but I'm gonna talk about it a bit later:
D&C 11:21 Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word,
and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have
my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men.
This week was pretty dope! The two highlights for this week was TLC, an
exchange with Elder Soucie, and also a zoom call with Elder Kyle S. McKay,
who gave the Joseph Smith talk in General Conference! (
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2024/10/33mckay?lang=eng)
The standout line from the talk was definitely the last one for me. "Praise
to the man who communed with Jehovah, and above all, praise to Jehovah, who
communed with that man!" Elder McKay actually lives right behind my mission
president, which is pretty cool! He also serves as the historian for the
church and so he's a really smart fella. (As a side note-I'm VERY excted
for Saints vol. 4 to come out!) In Elder McKay's message for us, he talked
about the verse I picked out for my message this week. He talked about the
"power of god unto the convincing of men" . I really like the verse because
it's not just preaching the word that convinces people, but also your
knowledge of that thing yourself! I thought that idea was cool, that
personal study is just as important as preaching the gospel. Another
amazing nugget of inspiration he dropped on me came after a question
someone asked him, I don't remember exactly what the question was but it
was something along the lines of being a perfectionist and being hard on
yourself for failing. The response?
"Don't try to do Jesus's job for him"
The expectation was never to be perfect on our own. Stop trying for that.
No amount of work on your part will make you perfect. You need help. Stop
trying to carry it on your own. Don't do his job.
I also got into my first "bible bash" this week, it was TERRIBLE! If you
don't know what a bible bash is, it's basically when somebody tries to
prove the missionaries wrong by quoting the bible and attacking with
doctrine and stuff like that. I've never had the spirit flee from me so
much than during that bash. The spirit of contention is certainly not of
the Lord. It's near impossible to have a positive outcome from a bash. The
person who was talking to us didn't necessarily know any scriptures, but
they tried to prove what we belive is wrong by... not the scriptures? I
don't know really, it was awful and we left as soon as we could. Thus far,
everyone has either been kind or indifferent, this is probably the first
sistinctly negative interaction i've had with anybody out here.
But onto more happy things! Our friends are doing okay(ish) some of em are
hard to get in contact with but we're trying! Thanks for your support and
love!
